It is the joy of every parent to see their children make them proud.

It is the joy of every parent to see their children go to the higher institution and make them proud. There are certain courses that Nigerian parents hold dear for reasons best known to them. These courses are perceived by society as the most promising courses hence Nigerian parents desire and sometimes impose these courses on their children.

1. Medicine

The rate at which young people apply to study medicine in the higher institution is on the high. Although some people desire to study medicine based on their passion while for others, it is mainly due to pressure from their parents. Some parents are just obsessed with the idea of their friends calling them “Mama Doctor” or “Baba Doctor”.

2. Engineering

Engineering is one course that is esteemed as very reputable and this is true to an extent. However, engineering courses demand a high level of interest and willingness because it deals with majorly calculations etc. Some parents know quite frankly that their children aren’t good at calculations and problem solving and still push and pressure them further into studying Engineering.

3. Law

Law is one course that not only benefits an individual but also his/her family and the community at large. Good lawyers are needed in the society to help curb criminal offences, stand for justice and create peace in the society. However, law isn’t the easiest of courses and demand a lot of time in studying. A child who is pressurized into studying this course might end of giving up midway.

I am not trying to say that these courses aren’t great. On the contrary, they are fulfilling courses and the desire of young ones to study these courses should be based on personal interests and passion as opposed to pressure from their parents.
